introduction
Tudela is a fourth class municipality in the province of Misamis Occidental, Philippines. It has a total land area of 9,852 hectares after three (3) of its original barangays were ceded to Don Victoriano. Tudela is widely known for its colorful and interesting Binalbal Festival, where many revelers are clad in very gory costumes like a giant Halloween costume party. It is held every New Year’s Day (January 1). Close to the border of Tudela is the eco-tourism attraction Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park (MOAP), which is located in its boundary with Sinacaban, its neighboring town to the north. It is headed by Municipal Mayor Samuel L. Parojinog, Who act as the local chief executive and assisted by the different department head heads of the (13) departments of the municipality. The Sanggunian, who acts as the law-making body of the municipality, is headed by Vice-Mayor Estela Obut-Estaño and supported by its eight (8) Sangguniang Bayan members, along with one (1) member of the Federated Association of Baranggay Council, and one (1) representative of the Indigenous People.
HISTORY
Simbalagon is the original name of this place, which was by then, a sitio of Ozamiz City. It was believed that in the 16th Century when the Spaniards came to the Philippines, a certain Spanish priest in the name of Reverend Jimenez, changed the name from Simbalagon to Tudela, a name similar to his birthplace in Spain. However, another story, which was handed down from generation, stated that the name Tudela, was in honor of a certain Parish Priest in the name of Rev. Fr. Apolinario Tudela, a Spanish missionary priest who was assigned in 1854 at Misamis Town.
During the American occupation in the Philippines, Tudela was formerly created and recognized as a municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 61 series of 1920, issued by the then, Governor General Francis Burton Harrison.
Geography
The Municipality of Tudela is strategically located in the center of the Province of Misamis Occidental. Its boundaries are the following: North by the Municipality of Sinacaban, South by the Municipality of Clarin, East by the Iligan Bay and the boundary of Panguil Bay, and West by the newly chartered but gigantic Municipality of Don Victoriano.
